IES Sun Project
The SUN (Students Understanding eNergy) Project, funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences, is creating new tools to teach teachers and their students about energy transfer in biology. High school biologyteachers who sign up for the study will partner with us in assessing the impact of the two-week teacher workshop and the effectiveness of these new tools in the classroom.
This project will occurduring the summer and school years of 2009 - 2011. Assignments will be given in September of this year, so sign up now!
Participants will use new manipulatives as they...
- Compare the mitochondrian to a hydrogen fuel cell
- Learn about respiration and photosynthesis
- Learn how ATP powers life
- Compare physical models of cytochrome c from yeast, tuna and humans
- Attend a two-week summer workshop in Milwaukee (2009 or 2010)
- Receive educational resources
- Earn 6 special graduate credits without tuition costs. However there is a $50 transcript fee.
- Stipends and housing are available

The SUN online application form is available here. A total of 56 teachers will be selected to participate based on our ability to effectively pair these teachers with someone of comparable experience and background so that one teacher from each pair will be randomly assigned to the workshop in the summer of 2009 or 2010. You will be notified of your participation and assignment to a particular workshop by September of 2008.* *Unfortunately, we cannot honor any requests for a particular summer, given the research requirements. |
