Science Olympiad
The Protein Modeling Event was held as a trial event at the 2008 National Tournament, which took place at the George Washington University in Washington, DC on 30-31 May 2008. The teams modeled the Top7 Protein, which is a novel protein fold created by the David Baker in Washington.
The teams used the October 2005 Molecule of the Month, written by David Goodsell, on designer proteins to learn about the protein structure and how this particular protein was designed. Using foam-covered wire, the students created physical models of the Top7 protein. The model was 50% of their final score. The remaining 50% was determined by their performance on an exam covering concepts in protein biochemistry, and the structure/function relationship.
